Rebecca asked this on Facebook, and I thought it was a great question to use for this week’s Girl Talk: Hey Nicole! I know you’ve been open about modesty in Girl Talk. I have the same views. Recently I’ve been trying to find fun comfy summer clothes. Everywhere I’ve been going has had super short shorts. I feel like I’m the only teenage girl who doesn’t want to parade around in them. It just feels like you’re not getting covered up. Besides that, a lot of other trends make me look a lot older, but I want to look my age and not conform to what everyone else is wearing. How can I be stylish without following everyone else? Also, do you have any good store recommendations for stylish yet modest and comfy clothes? Thanks! ♥
GREAT question, Rebecca! I’ll let the girls go first, as usual.
Emily said: I know what you’re dealing with, Rebecca. I have similar thoughts about clothes. Here’s a personal thing about me: I have a little mole on my leg that I use as a kind of guide mark. I don’t want my shorts to be shorter than that. If I try some on and they’re too short, I just move on to something else. Same thing with tops. I don’t mid fitted shirts, but I don’t want anything too low or tight. if it’s too low in front, I just wear a tank or cami under it. I recommend you look at stores online and see what they offer. Only go to the stores that have at least something that looks like you could wear it.
Natalie answered: I think it’s great that you’re worried about modesty. There are some really cute Bermuda shorts and longer shorts available. If you’re worried about not looking your age in longer clothes, do what I do: Accessorize! Choose trendy shirts and jewelry that are appropriate for your age so you feel comfortable around your friends. When you have a really cool necklace or pair of earrings and someone compliments you, that’s what you’ll focus on, not the length of your shorts. Treat those as a basic and let your pieces bring out your personality. That’s what I do!
Nicole said: I love this question. I love that you care about modesty, but totally get that you want to dress your age and not look like a frumpy old lady. There are places you can shop and achieve just that. I like Old Navy for that reason. They aren’t as pricey as some of the other stores, and they offer a wide variety of products, lengths, styles, and colors. Here are two of my favorite pairs of their shorts (click to go to the Old Navy page to see price and other available colors.)
Thanks, Rebecca! I hope you’ll stick to your commitment to modesty. Be a trendsetter by dressing well and having standards that stand out.

I love this article. It lets me know that I am not the only one who has this conversation with my 3 daughters. It is great to see feedback from teenage girls also. My girls love going to thrift stores. There are 3-4 in our area that we hit often! They look for ideas on Pinterest, then we’ll hit the thrift store for inexpensive ways to duplicate the look! Fun!
I am looking for your Facebook link. I am not seeing it. I wanted to post!
Thanks, Jackie! Do you mean my facebook page? It’s www.facebook.com/nicoleodell it should be in that bottom bar across the page. I don’t know if this post has shown up there yet. Let me make sure.
I’m off…
Thanks for the question, Rebecca!
I totally agree with this. There are a lot of clothing options that are trendy and fitting for this summer without looking slutty.
Thanks, Chris!!
